How artificial intelligence is changing our everyday lives

Our project manager Loredana works closely with artificial intelligence. In her blog post she explains how you can use AI yourself and where the future with AI is taking us.

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that allows computer programs to take on tasks which normally require human intelligence. These programs learn from data and can recognise patterns, process information and solve problems without direct human guidance. AI is applied in a wide range of fields to imitate and improve human-like abilities.

AI is used in many aspects of our daily lives, often without our consciously noticing. Many online shops, for instance, use AI to generate product recommendations based on past purchases and on the preferences of other customers. Platforms such as Facebook and Instagram use AI to show content and advertising in your news feed based on your interests. Search engines such as Google also use AI algorithms to provide the most relevant results for your queries. They take your search history, location data and other factors into account in order to show personalised results.

Using AI yourself

So AI goes far beyond translation or personalised advertising. Would you like to use an AI tool yourself and get a sense of what AI can do?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • ChatGPT can understand and generate natural language in order to answer questions and hold human-like conversations. The benefit lies in getting quick, precise answers to questions, help with tasks, and information on a wide range of subjects.

  • Adobe Firefly is a web application that uses generative AI to create things like images, text effects and colour palettes. Give it a try – it is genuinely good fun.

  • Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing Chat) answers questions in a chat, creates content and searches the web while it does so.

AI in everyday working life

AI tools can automate repetitive and routine work and so increase efficiency in the workplace. At xappido we use ChatGPT to write text, for example, so that we have a first draft quickly. We also use the tool to generate diagrams or test data.

Microsoft Copilot has since arrived in Microsoft 365 as well and is integrated into apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. With Copilot you can have meetings summarised, draft documents or create presentations.

People remain irreplaceable

In a working world increasingly shaped by AI, human capabilities such as creative thinking, emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills are becoming ever more important. AI can take on repetitive tasks and data analysis, but the ability to solve problems, to communicate and to develop innovations are human strengths that are hard to replace. Designing software that people find easy to use also calls for a deep understanding of human needs and behaviour, and that is an area in which AI cannot yet keep up.

The future with AI

AI is already an integral part of our world and will continue to transform many areas. In closing, I would recommend being aware that AI technologies influence our daily lives. It is worth informing yourself about how AI systems work and asking critical questions about how and where AI is used in your own everyday life. An open attitude towards developments in AI is essential if we are to understand both the potential and the challenges of this technology in a changing world.
