National Future Day 2021 at xappido

Eleven and ten years old, and already writing a program of their own: Lou and Elena spent half a day with us and wrote their first lines in the Logo language.

Eleven-year-old Lou from Sursee and ten-year-old Elena from Reinach in Aargau signed up through National Future Day for our special project “Mädchen-Informatik-Los!” (roughly, “girls, get going with IT”). For half a day the two of them got a taste of IT and programming with us, accompanied by Lea from our team.

First a look: what is xappido working on right now?

Before they got to the keyboard, Lea gave them a look at our current projects. Who is this software being built for, and what actually happens between an idea and a finished portal? Those are questions that rarely come up at school and are best answered at a real screen.

Programming with Logo

Then it got practical. In the xappido folder lay the programme for the day: “Programmieren mit Logo”. Logo is a programming language made specifically for learning. You type in short commands and see immediately what they do: a line, a turn, a shape. Step by step, Lea introduced Lou and Elena to the logic behind it.

Their first own program

In the practical exercises that followed, the two of them got straight to work. The worksheet gave the instructions; the rest Lou and Elena typed themselves, and line by line what had only been a command took shape on the screen. Now and then they looked over each other’s shoulders and puzzled out the tricky parts together.
